Maggie has been begging for two years to have her room redecorated. However, for a long time her pleas were for the same room as Mia. Although Mia's yellow, horse-themed room is darling, it is not Maggie's style. So, I kept telling her that I would help her fix up her room (since all she had were the hand-me-downs from the room she shared with Mia in Utah anyway, nothing she had picked out herself) when she was mature enough to know what she wanted and not just want to mimic Mia.
It took awhile. I figured around age 5 and kindergarten would be a good time to update it for the elementary school years. Then, if she wants to go a different direction for her teens, we could look at making another change. So, I began thinking about the perfect style for Maggie.
In the end we settled on drawing inspiration from two of her favorite things: Hello Kitty and Polka Dots. With this basis I secured a quilt and some clearance fabric from Ikea.
Then, in October, when my sister came to visit we set to re-purposing many of the items around the house for use in Maggie's room.
I spray painted an old lamp shade, letters that spelled her name, picture frames, an Eiffel tower 3D puzzle Jeffrey and the girls put together once, flower hooks Ellie brought from her room, and a $5 Restore chandelier. I re-painted the dresser from Elsie's room and the shelf in Maggie's. We re-used an old calendar for pictures to hang on the wall. We brought up a zebra rug and pillow that had been relegated to the play room. We modpodged old mats for pictures and decorated letters for her shelf. We brought in a mirror from Mia's room. Finally, we painted white background and polka dots on part of the walls and installed moldings (which, as you will see, I still need to caulk and touch-up) and built and painted a small shelf for the wall.
Then, I hit a speed bump. Maggie had wanted a bunk bed and a desk, but since her room is small, I planned to build her a loft-style bed with a desk underneath. But, I got busy, and it got cold, and I never got around to the bed. So, the room looked very unfinished.
Then, last week, I decided to come up with a way to make it complete without the new bed. I brought a little table into Maggie's room from Elsie Jane's closet and hung up her bulletin board to create a little "desk" area. Which she loves! She spends hours sitting at it working and drawing.
I also figured out how to turn her bed around and frame it out using the fabric I had saved for the bottom of the loft bed.
Honestly, it turned out so well that I am doubtful about ever implementing the initial plan.
Best of all, it is SOOOOOOO Maggie. I love that her room speaks so perfectly to her individual style.
If you don't know Maggie well, no worries. The room says it all.
