If I Could Turn Back Time

I am not sure that I would keep my kids small. (Except Elsie Jane, she I have wanted to freeze at several stages and ages.) But, pretty much, the older they get, the more I have enjoyed them. The more we can share life experiences together, plan together, even appreciate some of the same things.

I often remark on all the things we will be able to safely and smoothly do when Elsie is Maggie's age.

When Elsie Jane is 5 and can handle life without a nap, come along without riding in a stroller, know how to avoid danger and follow basic directions, keep up with the pace of the rest of us, know how to use a quiet voice, and appreciate educational experiences: Oh, the Places We'll Go!

Until then, I am just trying to soak in my last two year old and all the joys, and craziness, it brings.

And, while I would not turn time back so my other girls were two again, I would have taken time to notice and record more of the cute, passing things about them at this age.

Since I can't do that, I will make note of some of my favorite Elsie-isms.

The way she says her own name: "Hessie Danie."

The songs she sings: The Wheels on the Bus (with her hands over her eyes opening and closing her fingers when the babies on the bus go "Waah, waah, waah."), The Barney Theme (I love you, You love me, we bess fends fends shood be, gate big hug and tiss me and you, la la la la love me too), I Child God, and Old McDonald (where she always chooses a sheep).

Her favorite animal: A sheep. She got a sheep pillow pet last year at the fair because the older girls were getting one; she didn't really care about it at first, but now she can't sleep without her pillow pet and her other "seepie."

Her favorite food: "Macaroni-macaroni-mad-and-cheese." There is a song on Barney (which she loves) that has this lyric, Elsie Jane now things that this whole phrase is the proper way to request her favorite dish, which, as the song says, she would eat "three times daily" if I let her!

The way she always says "Thank you, Mommy" when I do something for her. She has the most sincere expression.

Her way of talking about her sisters: "Miamaggie" as though they are one person with one name.

How much she loves anything with "ABCD's" on it and sings the alphabet.

Other things that drive me crazy, but I don't want to forget:
The way she ALWAYS climbs on top of the counter. And then, gets herself dishes and food to eat all on her own.

The way she likes to be a nudist all the time since we started potty training.

The way she runs away from me when she doesn't want to comply, then stands in the corner in plain sight with her hands over her eyes, convinced I can't see her.

The way she begs for cheese to eat.

The way she loves to draw, just not on the right surfaces (sharpies on my couch last week left my slipcovers beyond repair!).

The way she talks loudly during church and then, if she can escape, takes a victory lap around the chapel, while other members of the congregation break out in audible laughter, and I try to figure out how to corner her without having to run, full-speed, around the pews myself.

And oh so many other things.

How very fun, and very crazy, it is being two!

i too wish i could freeze Katie. They are so precious at this age -- and so much more precious because they are the last.

And is think i might need to call her hessie danie.

you know... I must've missed that victory lap around the chapel... however, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one!
